Graduate Certificate Program in teaching and Higher Education

Center for Teaching & Academic Growth – UBC (Sept 09 – April 2010)
The GCP is a 1-year intensive graduate program designed to strengthen participant background in educational theory, deepen interactive pedagogical skills and develop a personal reflective teaching practice for post-secondary instruction. Participants attend bi-monthly cohort sessions to engage in constructive dialogue about topics related to higher education: the scholarship of teaching and learning, assessment and evaluation, theories of teaching and learning, inclusivity and community, and educational technology. Participants also attend an education conference, complete 8 hours of peer observation, 18 hours of educational seminars and workshops, and complete an independently directed group project (~38hours).

The ISW is an intensive 30hour workshop grounded in experiential learning aimed to develop and improve instructional strategies. Participants are introduced to a variety of teaching techniques, concepts in participatory learning, and a six-phase lesson planning model (the BOPPPS model). Participants deliver a series of mini-lessons, receive constructive peer feedback and are encouraged to reflect on their teaching philosophy and practice.
